The West Wingでも、バートレット大統領がラジオ演説の録音をする場面がありました。
もうすぐ二期八年の任期が終わるブッシュ大統領の、クリスマスのラジオ演説が、いかにも・・・という内容だったので、ちょっと紹介します。
オバマさんに代わったらHPも刷新されるので、過去の分を見たければ今のうち。題名だけ眺めるだけでも、この八年の流れがわかって面白いと思いますよ。

President's Radio Address, Dec. 23 Christmas
Good morning. This week, millions of Americans gather with loved ones for Christmas. This is a season of hope and joy. And it is an occasion to remember a humble birth that has helped shape the world for more than two thousand years.
One of the things that makes Christmas special is that it allows us to step back and take stock of what is truly meaningful in our lives. As years pass by, we often forget about the gifts and the parties, but we remember special moments with families and friends.
メリークリスマス・ライクな挨拶はこれでおしまい。全体の1/5くらい。

This year, as you spend time with those you love, I hope you'll also take time to remember the men and women of our armed forces. Every one of them has volunteered to serve our Nation. And with their incredible sacrifices, they preserve the peace and freedom that we celebrate during this season.
クリスマスの間も戦っているアメリカ軍の兵士がいる、彼らの犠牲の上に平和で自由なクリスマスがあることを思い出して欲しいと。
This tradition of service is as old as our Nation itself. In 1776, it looked as if America's first Christmas as an independent Nation might also be its last.

That miracle took place on Christmas night, 1776. George Washington planned a surprise attack on the enemy forces camped across the Delaware River in Trenton, New Jersey.

Two hundred and thirty-two years have passed since George Washington crossed the Delaware. But on this Christmas, his legacy lives on in the men and women of the United States military. Some of them are spending this holiday helping defend emerging democracies like Iraq and Afghanistan.
Others are spending it in lands where we defeated tyranny long ago, such as Germany or Japan.

Turmoil, Resilient [eigo]
最近のブッシュ大統領のスピーチから。
"We recognize that the turmoil in the financial markets is affecting all our citizens, all of us recognize this is a serious global crisis that requires a serious global response for the good of our people."
"turmoil"は、混乱、騒ぎという意味で、アクセントが頭にあるので、”たーもぅ”みたいに聞こえます。
currency turmoil ： 通貨不安
emotional turmoil ： 精神的動揺
同じスピーチの後半から。
Our economy is innovative, industrious and resilient because the American people who make up our economy are innovative, industrious and resilient.
その翌日のラジオ演説。
We have the strongest and most resilient economy in the world.
resilientは、弾力性のある、回復力のある、という意味。
直近のスピーチで何回も使っているところをみると、resilientを重要なキーワードにしてるようですね。
もう少し簡単な単語ないのかな、とブッシュさんも思ってるかも。

ペイリン、バイデン両副大統領候補のdebateのニュースに、
She was almost overlooked.
という表現がありました。
overlookは、語感のままに「見渡す」という意味かと思っていたのでピンと来ませんでしたが、辞書を引くと、「見落とす」「見過ごす」「見逃す、大目に見る」の方が先に出てました。
高いところから下を見渡す、というより、視線を上にあげて見ないようにする、焦点を合わせない、というような感覚の方が強いようです。
つまり、She was almost overlooked.は、彼女（ペイリン候補）はだいぶ大目に見られていた（でも今は・・・）、ということなのでした。
ほかにOver...で思いつく単語では、overprotected。これはズバリ、「過保護」です。
overprotected child, overprotective parents、など。
“There you go again, talking about the past.” （またあなたは過去のことを言ってますね）
というペイリン候補の切り返しにも賛否両論のようです。
Debate戦術的にうまいセリフだった、というものから、過去ではなくつい最近のことなんだから・・・、という意見まで。（Palin’s problem and McCain’s, is that the recent past is crucial in this election. ）
あと、ペイリン候補の報道でよく耳にする単語では、folksy, cutesyがあります。

She tried to get cutesy...
folksy 「庶民的な」はいいとして、cutesyはcute-syなので、「かわい子ぶった」とか「ぶりっ子の」。
こういうとき、同時通訳の人はなんて言うんでしょうね。語感的に「気取ってる」というのとも違うし、やっぱり「ぶりっ子」がぴったりの気がしますが(^。^)。
